The Economic Status of African-americans in Mississippi

frican-Americans make up 37% of Mississippi’s population, the highest percentage of any state, and account for a third of the working age population 25 to 64 years old. While the status of Mississippi’s black population has improved greatly over the past twenty-five years, and milestone accomplishments in the economic, political and social arenas have been achieved, much remains to be done. This article provides a snapshot of the economic status of African Americans in Mississippi today, noting remaining challenges and promising trends. Policy implications are considered.
